Rising Inequality during pandemic - A threat to World Peace and Economic Development

Just imagine during the early months of the pandemic, when local businesses across the country closed and millions of hungry Americans turned to food banks for the first time, over a period of seven-month America’s 614 billionaires grew their net worth by a collective $931 billion. And today, according to a Washington Post report the wealthiest 1 percent of American households own 40 percent of the country’s wealth and the bottom 90 percent of families holding less than one-quarter of all wealth. This share is higher than it has been at any point since at least 1962. Before I go any further, I want to share a short passage from a book that I recently received. The book entitled “ For the Well-Being of All: Eliminating the Extremes of Wealth and Poverty ” was published by the Bahá’í Publishing Trust of USA. One page 9, it says, “ The inordinate disparity between rich and poor, a source of acute suffering, keeps the world in a state of instability, virtually on the brink of war. Few ...

Food wastage is the key reason behind poverty and hunger. Solution lies in a profound change of heart and mind

Food wastage is the key reason behind poverty and hunger                                           Solution lies in a profound change of heart and mind How often you all go to buffet meals at restaurants alone or with your family and friends?  We normally look for buffet meals that offer more for our money. We feel the need to indulge in a little bit everything at the buffet table. And for the dishes we like the most, we serve large portions on our plate. The desire to put endless meals on our plate and eat all you can leads to food wastage all over the world.  I am convinced that wastage of food is one of the main causes behind global hunger and poverty. According to a report from the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), globally one-third of the food produced is wasted, putting an estimate of the cost to world economy about US$750 billion. I just cannot imagi...
Black and White: America’s Most Critical  and Challenging Issue                        So, we observed the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King’s famed “I have a Dream” speech recently. The anniversary presented us the perfect opportunity to reflect on how those four words helped change the course of the history of this great nation. Yes. We have made remarkable progress during the past five decades in terms of racial disparity. African Americans now hold senior positions in the military, business and politics. America has produced many African American cultural icons. Interracial marriages are widely accepted in the society now. Yet, not withstanding the efforts already expended for its elimination, racism continues to work its evil upon this nation even after a half a century. Racism runs deep. It infects the ...

Eradicating Poverty

E radicating Poverty: Moving Forward As One We all know that all around the world rich are getting richer. Nearly thirty years ago, the richest 1 percent of Americans got 9 percent of total national income in the United States, By 2007, they had 23 percent. In 2009, new census data show, the rich-poor income gap was the widest on record. (David R. Francis - Christian Science Monitor ). According to Timothy Noah of Slate , the United States now has a more unequal distribution of wealth than some of the third world countries like, Nicaragua, Venezua and Guyana. Timothey writes, “ All my life I've heard Latin America described as a failed society (or collection of failed societies) because of its grotesque maldistribution of wealth. Peasants in rags beg for food outside the high walls of opulent villas, and so on. But according to the Central Intelligence Agency income distribution in the United States is more unequal than in Guyana, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, and roughly ...
